Hack recovery
Instagram
Instagram hacked?
Here’s how to get it back.
Instagram’s official recovery steps in plain English, in the order to try them, plus the scams that target people who just got locked out.
Watch for recovery scams. Never call a “support” number you found in a search, and never pay someone who messages you offering to get your account back. Instagram’s real help starts in the app or at instagram.com/hacked.
Locked out?
Try these in order.
Instagram says some steps may not show up for every profile, so it recommends trying all of them.
Check your email for a message from Instagram
If the hacker changed your email, Instagram sends a note to your old address from security@mail.instagram.com. Open it and choose secure my account to reverse the change. If they also changed your password and you can’t undo it from there, move to the next step.
Ask for a login link
On the login screen, tap Forgot password?, enter your username, email or phone number, and send yourself a login link. Open it from your email or text and follow the prompts. If you no longer have the email or phone on the account, start at instagram.com/hacked instead.
Request a security code or support
If the login link doesn’t get you in, you can request support from Instagram on a phone. Use an email address only you can get into, because that’s where Instagram sends the next steps.
Verify it’s you
If your profile has photos of you, Instagram asks for a short video selfie of you turning your head. It’s never posted and is deleted within 30 days, and if it doesn’t work you can send a new one. If your profile doesn’t have photos of you, Instagram instead asks for the email or phone number you signed up with and the kind of device you used back then.
Still logged in?
Lock it down now.
Someone may have your password even if you haven’t lost access yet.
- Change your password, or send yourself a password reset email.
- Turn on two-factor authentication so a password alone can’t get anyone in.
- Check your email and phone number in your profile settings and fix anything that isn’t yours.
- Look through Accounts Center and remove any connected profiles you don’t recognize.
- Revoke access for any third-party apps that look suspicious.

Is one of these yours and you’d rather it weren’t here? Tap Is this you? to message us on Instagram and we’ll take it down within a day.

Never go through
this alone again.
- Connect through the platform you already use. Tap Connect and approve it inside Instagram. No passwords.
- Alerts by text and in the app. The moment something looks wrong, you hear about it.
- Recovery, or you get paid. If we can’t recover your account, you get paid up to $25,000.
